McCain’s Artful Political Warfare
As a graduate of one of the military’s war college command and staff courses, it’s been amazing to watch the McCain campaign in action to date. During the period between the primaries and the conventions, they’ve been running a classic, pre-emptive guerrilla war against the Obama camp. During this time, McCain maintained a relatively low profile and husbanded his resources, only acting when the Obama camp made a move that could substantially widen the race. And, McCain always attacked Obama’s strengths, or “centers of gravity” in military parlance, and did so very effectively. Here are some examples:
Argument: Obama’s very charismatic and can turn out and excite huge crowds.
Counter-argument: So can Britney Spears. Would you want her as president?
Argument: Obama’s a once-in-a-generation orator capable of inspiring and exciting voters.
Counter-argument: He’s also an indecisive, long-winded stumbler away from the teleprompter, which is where he’d be most of the time as president.
Argument: Obama can really connect with ordinary people.
Counter-argument: Obama only cares about connecting when the cameras are rolling. Remember those wounded warriors in Germany he blew off?
Argument: Obama’s lived and traveled overseas, can identify with the rest of the world and Europe loves him!
Counter-argument: He spent how much time overseas? Is Obama American enough?
And finally, the misinformation (or an operational deception campaign?) surrounding McCain’s pick of a running mate, and final announcement the day after Obama’s nomination, have successfully strangled any Obama convention bounce in its crib. In fact, to date this strategy has successfully limited all of Obama’s surges in the polls.
Now, however, Obama’s monopoly of the media has come to an end and the amount of coverage is evening out. McCain’s attacks will now coalesce around the big issue of the campaign among voters of both parties: change. Examine McCain’s comments when he introduced Governor Palin.
“I have found the right partner to help me stand up to those who value their privileges over their responsibilities, who put power over principle, and put their interests before your needs…I found someone with an outstanding reputation for standing up to special interests and entrenched bureaucracies; someone who has fought against corruption and the failed policies of the past.”
Obama will continue to talk in broad terms about change, but the McCain camp will start asking about specifics and comparing records to prove who can deliver. After all, Obama’s record on change is weak thus far. For example:
- As a private citizen, Obama associated with a known terrorist, a child molester, a chairman of the Chinese communist party in America and an America-hating pastor. Obama only distanced himself from these controversial figures when public opinion turned against him.
- As chaiman of the Chicago Annenberg Challenge, Obama spent over $100 million dollars on projects in the school system in Chicago which yielded no measurable change in the view of auditors.
- As a candidate for state senate in Illinois, Obama chose to go along with his party and adopt the dirty tricks of the Chicago political machine to get elected.
- While in office as a state senator, the only noteworthy time he strayed from his own party’s position was when he voted–alone–against the Born Alive Infants Protection Act.
- While in office as a U.S. Senator, Obama voted with Democrats over 96% of the time as rated by National Journal.
- As the Democrats’ presumptive nominee for president, Obama chose a consummate Washington insider as a running mate.
- As the Democrats’ nominee for president, Obama demonstrated in his acceptance speech that he’s not interested in new ideas, he merely wants to recycle old ideas. The array of big government programs and policies he proposed look nearly identical to those of every mainstream Democrat candidate since the Great Depression.
In comparison, the McCain/Palin record is much more strong:
- McCain has been vocally at odds with his party over the years on issues like earmarks, campaign finance reform, illegal immigration and torture, and has worked with Democrats in the process.
- As the Republicans’ presumptive nominee, McCain chose a running mate from a state so far from Washington part of it is in the eastern hemisphere.
- Palin won every office she’s held without the assistance of her own party.
- As mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, Palin cut wasteful spending.
- As chaiman of Alaska’s Oil and Gas Commission, Palin exposed corrupt officials in the Alaska Republican Party and supported the opponent of recently indicted Republican Sen. Ted Stevens.
- As Governor of Alaska, Palin again cut wasteful spending.
- As Governor of Alaska, Palin worked with Democrats to pass effective ethics reform.
As a result, expect McCain to shift directions in the convention and press hard against Obama’s only remaining strong point. From a military standpoint, Obama made a critical strategic error with the pick of Biden. Obama tried to reinforce his key point of weakness instead of his key point of strength. Far from “rolling the dice”, McCain has made a bold move and reinforced his ticket as a proven agent of nonpartisan change, and executed correctly and aggressively, the strategy will keep Obama on the defensive until November and pay big dividends on election day.

You make some arguable points. I point out to you the following;
1. The Chicago Annenberg Challenge is funded by a top Respublican person. He chose to put Obama in this position to ‘help’ the inner city Chicago schools. The outcome, is questionable. My point is that he was put there by a Respublican, who used his vast wealth to try and steal himself into the working politics of Chicago2.
2. Dirty tricks of the Chicago machine? Two words- Richard Nixon
3.Born Infants Act- you got me here, I don’t know anything.
4. As a US Senator, I think we can BOTH agree an elected person from a political party does ALMOST ALWAYS vote with his/her party. This is a stupid point to make, like you’re saying no Respublicans vote with this % for their party.
5.Obama chose a Washington insider. Yeah, let’s see, whom did George W. pick?……..oh yeah, [explicative deleted] chaney, with what 20+ years IN Washington AND under GWI inside his cabinet.
6. No new ideas since Roosevelt? How about the New Frontier? the Great Society? (part of which was the Civil Rights Act, or are good ‘ol boys still in favor of the plantation system?
Part B-McCain
1.Agreed, McCain can and HAS put aside petty differences with the demos, but WHY do the Respublicans hate him for it
2.Yes, he chose someone from the Eastern hemisphere, but you first should check your outdated (made in China) geography book, Alaska is STILL in the west, unless you reps have given it to china as a reward.I refer back to part1,#5.
3. Palin has won, oh SOOO many elections without her party. Hey jerk, where she lives, there’s but one party, humans.
4. Palin has cut wasteful spending, in….Wasilla; wow! what’s the town budget?,$350?
5.Palin went AGAINST her party, helping to oust two corrupt politicians. (Did I mention they were respublicans?
Oh yeah, one of them was the mastermind of the enormous cost to the taxpayers ,and author of—”The bridge to Nowhere!”
6. Governor Palin, sounds good, wow, she has an enormous amount of leadership/experience, aWHOLE2 years! Obama a youth/untested in political waters? Hey, he’s the late Jesse Helms(experience next to her)
7. Again, I don’t know anything here.
8. I won’t bring it in, but the whole country wants to know more about Palin’s [explicative deleted] daughter, [explicative deleted] pregnant and unmarried at 17! Talk about the Kennedys! And hey, shes REALLY got herself a classy man…a high schooler, who isn’t in school to finish getting his prestigous HS diploma,WOW , a great family portrait.
I’m not using this last one, but you can bet a ton of people will, including our beloved media.
I’m not a demo nor a resp, I’m fence sitting now, but with this out of solar system pick for VP, I can surmise, the resps, are throwing in the towel and looking to’12.
Do you realize,. if this man(McCain),at 73,dies in office, we will have a VP with virtually no more leadership, experience than an elected sophomore high schooler running for the student council. You praise her, for what?Bearing kids at twice the national rate, coming from a nowhere(politically) stat e. Reminds one of the ‘classy’ pick by GWI with mister magna cum laude; Dan (tomatos) Quayle. What brilliance.
One more thing, you speak of Obama as being charismatic and turning out crowds, then make an assnine comparison to that delinquent [explicative deleted]-nothing spears. First off use a valid comparison;someone in politics, besides, the [explicative deleted] isn’t even 35 and not eligible for the presidencyCan’t stop now-Obama as a stumbling orator. That’s good, real good. Have you ever seen the current Shakepearean bard/orator GW Bush? ,a real debator, isn’t he? or speaking of stumblers, I give you the all time, half asleep stumbler giant, ronald mcdonald reagan.
Face it, this is not the year for thew respublkicans,or as we call it, the year of the recessionist, deficit tallying tax the middle classes, get rich GOP.
The gop and the dems BOTH do things wrong, buy surely, only a retardic moron would ignore what has happened to this country in the hands of these respublikans in the last eight years. They took the balanced bugdget/surplus and turned it into the worst deficit in our country’s history, gone to war without cause. Spent more money there (note; Halliburton=rebuilding of Iraq=Cheney=more money=no competitive bids)did nothing about big oil(GW’s not involved iwth big oil,is he?) is still looking for that [explicative deleted] bid laden, and of course, he really helped the people of new Orleans three years ago.Get with it, you may not like it, but IT’;S TIME FOR A CHANGE, even if Obama is piss poor, he’ll do a better job AND he WILL re-unite this country again.

First, my argument is McCain/Palin have a more substantial record of effecting change. You’re argument appears to be, “They’re Republicans, and other Republicans have played politics as usual, therefore McCain/Palin will play politics as usual”. Doesn’t this logic apply to Obama/Biden also?
Second, you seem to be arguing later in your comment that anyone who doesn’t have a picture perfect family is ineligible for elected office. Is that the case, because if that’s what you’re arguing, Obama’s not eligible because his mother was an unmarried teenager when she conceived him.
